When to Call a Field Vibration Engineer — and When You’ve Waited Too Long

The most common mistake operators make with compressor vibration problems is waiting. A vibration issue that announces itself as a minor rattle in year one of operation often becomes a piping failure or foundation crack by year three if left unaddressed. Understanding when to call for a field investigation — and recognizing the signs that the situation has already become urgent — is the first step in managing vibration risk effectively.

Early Warning Signs

The earliest indicators of a developing vibration problem are often subtle: an unusual sound that wasn’t present at startup, visible movement in a section of pipe that previously appeared stationary, or an instrument tap that seems to work itself loose repeatedly. These are signals worth investigating, not ignoring.

Vibration that is visible to the naked eye at normal operating speed is already at a level where fatigue accumulation is occurring. If you can see a pipe moving, damage is accumulating. The question is only how fast.

Urgent Indicators

Some findings require immediate action. Cracked welds — even hairline cracks — at pipe connections indicate that the fatigue endurance limit has been exceeded and failure is imminent. Leaking instrument connections, particularly on lines carrying process gas, represent both a reliability and safety issue. Foundation cracking or grout deterioration suggests that dynamic loads are exceeding what the foundation was designed to handle.

What a Field Investigation Provides

A properly conducted field vibration investigation quantifies the actual vibration levels and frequencies at critical locations, identifies the specific excitation sources, and compares measured data to allowable limits. The output is a prioritized set of corrective recommendations with engineering basis — not a general observation that “there is too much vibration.”
