For operators unfamiliar with field vibration investigations, the process can feel opaque. Understanding what actually happens during a site visit — what data is collected, what equipment is used, and what deliverables to expect — helps ensure that the investigation is productive and that the results are actionable.
Pre-Visit Preparation
Before arriving on site, TTI Field Engineering reviews available documentation: the original pulsation analysis (if one exists), piping isometrics, and any maintenance history related to the vibration problem. This preparation allows the measurement campaign to be focused on the most likely problem areas rather than collecting data randomly.
We also confirm the operating conditions that will be in place during the measurement campaign. Vibration measurements taken at off-design conditions may not represent the worst-case operating scenario.
On-Site Data Collection
During the site visit, vibration measurements are taken at pre-identified critical locations using calibrated accelerometers and velocity transducers. Measurements are taken simultaneously at multiple locations where possible, allowing phase relationships to be determined.
Operating conditions — speed, suction and discharge pressures, gas temperature — are recorded simultaneously with each vibration measurement to allow the data to be correlated with process conditions.
Dynamic pulsation measurements, where access and safety conditions permit, are taken using pressure transducers installed in existing instrument taps.
Deliverables
The investigation report documents the measured vibration levels at each location, the frequency content of the vibration, a comparison to API 618 and other applicable guidelines, a root cause assessment based on the measurement data, and a prioritized set of corrective recommendations with engineering basis.
Corrective recommendations are specific — a support at a defined location, an orifice plate at a specific pipe location with a calculated diameter, a modification to a specific structural element. General observations without specific recommendations are not useful, and we don’t provide them.
