Temporary Fixes vs. Permanent Solutions — How to Tell the Difference

When a compressor package is experiencing excessive vibration, the pressure to get it back online quickly often leads to temporary fixes being implemented without a clear plan for permanent resolution. Understanding the difference between a temporary fix that buys time and one that masks a problem is critical for managing long-term reliability.

Legitimate Temporary Measures

Some field modifications genuinely reduce vibration temporarily while a permanent solution is engineered and implemented. Adding clamps to tie moving pipes to stationary structures can reduce vibration amplitude and extend fatigue life while a permanent support redesign is completed. Reducing compressor speed, if operationally possible, reduces excitation energy and can bring vibration within acceptable limits temporarily.

These measures are legitimate when they are implemented with a clear understanding of what they achieve, how long they will hold, and what the permanent solution is.

Measures That Mask Problems

Some common temporary fixes do not actually reduce the dynamic load on the piping — they only change where the damage accumulates. Adding a clamp in the middle of a vibrating span, for example, may stop visible pipe movement at that location but simply shift the vibration amplitude to the next span. The pipe is still being loaded cyclically; the failure location has just moved.

Similarly, adding stiffening to a structure without addressing the source of excitation changes the structural response without reducing the forcing function. The system may appear to improve initially but the modification may have introduced a new resonance that will manifest differently over time.

How to Tell the Difference

The reliable way to distinguish temporary relief from genuine improvement is to measure vibration before and after the modification at multiple locations — not just at the location where the modification was made. A genuine improvement reduces vibration throughout the affected system. A location-shifting fix reduces it at one point while increasing it at another.
