Why Two Identical Compressor Packages Can Vibrate Very Differently

It is not uncommon for an operator to run two nominally identical compressor packages — same model, same horsepower, same configuration — at the same facility and find that one runs smoothly while the other has persistent vibration problems. This situation is confusing and often leads to incorrect conclusions about equipment quality. The explanation is almost always in the details of the installation.

The Acoustic Boundary Conditions

Two identical compressors connected to different piping systems will produce different pulsation levels in those piping systems. The acoustic behavior of the connected piping — its resonance frequencies, the standing wave patterns it supports, the pulsation levels at critical locations — is determined by the piping geometry, not by the compressor alone.

Even small differences in pipe lengths, elbow placements, or header connections between two nominally similar installations can shift acoustic resonance frequencies enough to create a significant difference in pulsation levels.

The Structural Boundary Conditions

Similarly, two identical compressors mounted on different skids, or on the same model skid but with different foundation conditions, will have different vibration levels. The dynamic stiffness of the support structure — which depends on skid construction, foundation type, soil conditions, and grouting quality — directly affects how much vibration results from a given excitation force.

A compressor mounted on a stiff, well-grouted foundation on competent soil will vibrate less than the same compressor on a flexible skid with poor grouting on soft soil, even with identical excitation forces.

The Installation Quality Factor

Grouting quality deserves special mention. Grout voids between the compressor base plate and the skid, or between the skid and the foundation, create local flexibility and impact contact that significantly increase vibration levels. Grouting procedures, grout material selection, and curing conditions all affect the final grouting quality.

The practical implication is that diagnosing a vibration problem in one of two identical packages requires investigating the installation-specific factors, not just the equipment. A side-by-side measurement campaign on both packages, combined with an assessment of foundation and grouting condition, will almost always identify the root cause.
